Linden Hall girls stop Sullivan County for first PIAA state-playoff win in program history

Linden Hall did something for the first time in the history of its girls basketball program on Saturday.

The Lions won a state-playoff game.

Tahri Phillips bucketed 20 points and Anya Miller chipped in with 14 points, leading Linden Hall, the District Three third-place finisher, to a 53-47 victory over District Four runner-up Sullivan County in a PIAA Class A first-round game played at Williamsport High School.

Linden Hall, now 24-2 overall and the Midstate Athletic Conference champ, led 29-24 at the break, and then held off Sullivan County in the second half, setting up a second-round game on Wednesday against District 11 winner Pottsville Nativity BVM, which topped District One third-seed Christian Academy 46-34 on Saturday.

Sullivan County, which finished its season 21-5 overall, outscored Linden Hall 23-22 in the second half, but the Lions used a 16-point second-quarter run to grab a 5-point halftime lead — and then hold on from there to win for the first time in a PIAA playoff game.

Sullivan County, which fell to reigning state 1A runner-up Lourdes Regional in the district championship, was playing under assistant coach Kurt Parrish. The Williamsport Sun-Gazette reported that head coach Shannon Pietroski resigned her post earlier this week.
